Designing for the Afternoon.

The client approached Orenda with a singular request: they wanted a home that felt completely settled the moment they walked through the door. Not a showpiece, but a sanctuary where the architecture recedes and the atmosphere takes over. The existing structure, while generous in proportion, suffered from fragmented circulation and an over-reliance on artificial lighting.

Situated on the western shore of Lake Como, the villa receives its most dramatic light in the late afternoon. Instead of fighting this sharp, raking sunlight, we designed the entire spatial sequence and material palette to capture it. We opened the western elevations and restructured the central stairwell to act as a light well, pulling the afternoon glow deep into the private quarters.

The material palette was kept intentionally brief to maintain visual silence. We chose heavily smoked Italian walnut to absorb the lakeside glare, paired with unfilled Navona travertine that catches soft, moving shadows as the sun sets over the water. These materials were not simply applied to surfaces; they were used volumetrically to carve out thick, monumental thresholds between rooms.

Every piece of built-in cabinetry, architectural hardware, and ambient lighting was custom-designed by our Milan atelier. By controlling these elements in-house, we ensured that no off-the-shelf fixture interrupted the quiet rhythm of the space.

The result is a residence that requires very little styling to feel complete. It is a house tuned to the slow passage of the day—a space that feels as grounded and inevitable as the landscape it overlooks.

"They returned the house to us quieter than we imagined it could be. It does not feel decorated; it feels grounded."
